The discount

Pre-tax money is cheaper than it looks

Every pre-tax dollar comes off your taxable wages before withholding is figured, so your check drops by less than you put in. On a $65,000 salary, $250 per check into a 401(k) shrinks the deposit by about $220, from $2,093 to $1,873, while the full $250 lands in the account. That gap is the tax you didn't pay. The gross pay vs. net pay guide shows where each deduction sits in the stack.

Payroll deductions

Order of operations on your stub

Payroll subtracts Section 125 health premiums and HSA first (these skip income tax and FICA), then 401(k) (skips income tax only), then computes federal and state withholding on what's left, then FICA, then post-tax items like Roth and garnishments. To see the running total on your own numbers, the take-home pay calculator itemizes every line, and the paycheck calculator covers all 50 states.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 401(k) contribution really cost per paycheck?+

Less than the contribution, because it skips income tax. On a $65,000 salary paid biweekly, putting $250 per check into a traditional 401(k) lowers take-home pay by only about $220: the other $30 would have gone to federal tax. The higher your bracket and state tax, the bigger the discount.

Which paycheck deductions are pre-tax?+

Traditional 401(k), 403(b) and 457 contributions, HSA and FSA money, commuter benefits, and health, dental and vision premiums paid through an employer's Section 125 cafeteria plan. Roth contributions, union dues, garnishments and most life insurance are post-tax.

Do 401(k) contributions reduce Social Security and Medicare tax?+

No. Traditional 401(k) money avoids federal and state income tax now, but FICA's 7.65% still applies to it. Section 125 health premiums and HSA contributions made through payroll avoid FICA too, which makes them the most tax-efficient dollars on your stub.

What is the 401(k) contribution limit?+

The employee deferral limit is $24,500 for 2026 (up from $23,500 in 2025), plus a $7,500+ catch-up for workers 50 and older. Employer matching doesn't count against your employee limit. On 26 checks, maxing out means about $942 per check.

Should I enter health insurance premiums as pre-tax or post-tax?+

If the premium comes out of your paycheck at work, it's almost certainly a Section 125 plan: enter it as pre-tax. Premiums you pay outside payroll (a marketplace plan, COBRA) don't belong in the calculator at all; they don't change withholding.
