FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many paychecks is semi-monthly?+
24 a year: two per calendar month, most commonly on the 1st and 15th or the 15th and last day. Unlike biweekly pay (26 checks), semi-monthly never produces a three-paycheck month; every month looks the same, which makes budgeting simpler.
Is semi-monthly the same as biweekly?+
No. Semi-monthly is twice a month (24 checks); biweekly is every two weeks (26 checks). On a $60,000 salary the semi-monthly check is $2,500 gross versus $2,308 biweekly. Annual pay and annual tax are identical; only the slicing differs.
How do I calculate semi-monthly pay from salary?+
Divide by 24. A $60,000 salary is $2,500 gross per semi-monthly period; after federal tax and FICA a single filer in a no-tax state deposits about $2,100. State income tax lowers it from there.
Why does my semi-monthly check vary in hours but not pay?+
Semi-monthly periods contain 9 to 12 workdays, but salaried pay is a flat 1/24 of annual salary regardless. Hourly employees on semi-monthly schedules do see varying checks, because the hours in each half-month differ.
